02. Cat Cattinson

“I have always dreamed of being a singer. I started performing onstage with my family at the age of 7, and by 13 I had written and produced my first album. However, I was also questioning my gender and suffered from gender dysphoria. I thought transitioning was the only option. After a 30-minute phone call with a doctor at Planned Parenthood, I obtained a prescription for testosterone. After only a few months, painful side effects from the hormones began to take their toll. The day I opened my mouth to sing and nothing came out, I broke down and realized that medical transition had been the wrong path. After introspection through meditation, yoga, and talk therapy, I realized that my womanhood was never the problem; it was the abuse and misogyny I'd experienced on the basis of being female. After nearly 2 years of retraining my voice, I have started recording and performing again. I am grateful for the lessons learned from transition and hope that by sharing my story, I can help others who are confused about their gender."
